How Cam Newton’s Move to Foxboro Has Changed the Odds for 2020 NFL MVP

The announcement that Cam Newton was heading to New England took the sporting world by storm.

Not only did it send ripples across the AFC and throughout the NFL, it immediately impacted the betting markets as well.

The betting public did not appear to be remotely concerned about the presence of Jarrett Stidham on the Patriots roster, as a lot of public movement immediately occurred on Cam Newton MVP futures as well as bets on the Patriots to win their division, the AFC and Super Bowl respectively.

Here’s how Patriots futures odds have adjusted since the announcement of Cam joining Bill Belichick.

Cam Newton MVP Odds

  • Before signing with Patriots: +10000
  • After signing with Patriots: +3000

Cam Newton’s MVP odds skyrocketed after the announcement he was heading to the Patriots to replace Tom Brady.  Newton now finds himself in the Top 10 of NFL MVP odds after being a significant long shot since the Carolina Panthers released Newton in late March.

Naturally, a player that is not even on a roster is not likely to have good MVP odds to begin with, but you can still see how quickly oddsmakers moved Cam’s MVP odds to account for his new home.

The public has particularly fallen in love with these odds, as there have been a lot of bets placed on the former 2015 NFL MVP to replicate the act in New England.

Patriots Odds to Win the AFC East 2020

  • Before signing Cam Newton: +140
  • After signing Cam Newton: +115

In what should be the most interesting division race in the AFC, the smallest change in odds came in the Patriots odds to win the division moving slightly from +140 to +115.

The Patriots are once again the short favorites to win the AFC East, now closely edging out a young Buffalo Bills team listed at +130.

Cam Newton figures to play a major part in the Patriots quest to win the same division that they have won since 2008.

The last time the Buffalo Bills were crowned champs came all the way back in 1995.

Will Cam Newton be the difference?  So far, the action on this remains mostly split across all four teams in this suddenly wide-open division.

Patriots Odds to Win AFC 2020

  • Before signing Cam Newton: +1200
  • After singing Cam Newton: +1000

Prior to the signing of Cam Newton, the Patriots were lumped together with the likes of the Colts (+1100), Bills and Steelers (+1200).

The Patriots are still lumped together in this next tier of teams, but they’re now seen as the third-largest threat in the crowded AFC.

The Chiefs (+225) and Ravens (+275) remain the top two favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl 55.

Patriots Odds to Win Super Bowl 55

  • Before signing Cam Newton: +2500
  • After signing Cam Newton: +2000

To mirror the Patriots odds to win the American Football Conference, the Pats are now the third most likely AFC team to win the Super Bowl, moving from +2500 to +2000 after signing Cam Newton.

The move surged New England up the odds board past teams like the Colts (+2200), Bills, Vikings and Steelers (all listed at +2500).

The NFC has four teams above the Patriots – the 49ers (+900), Buccaneers (+1000), Saints (+1100) and Cowboys (+1700) – still in front of them on the odds board.

New England’s 20-1 mark is also the same as the Seahawks and Eagles.
