The Hook
Lost in the mix of the fallout from ‘Super Wild Card Weekend’ and the National Championship game is the fact that the Philadelphia Eagles suddenly have a vacancy at head coach, becoming the seventh such team in the NFL to enter the offseason in need of a coach.
According to Eagles’ reporter Geoff Mosher from InsideTheBirds.com, and confirmed by Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk, the team has already reached out to Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley about his interest in making the leap from the college game to the pros.
Riley would certainly be an interesting hire given his track record for maximizing a quarterback’s potential before they enter the NFL Draft, his latest case study in this regard is none other than Eagles’ quarterback, and former Oklahoma Sooner, Jalen Hurts, who figures to compete for the starting job this summer after Carson Wentz found himself benched due to performance at the end of the season.
Reports out of Philadelphia indicate that Howie Roseman’s relationship with Lincoln Riley is much more pleasant than his working relationship with recently departed Doug Pederson, and Riley has already had some influence on Eagles’ personnel decisions as he reportedly helped entice the Eagles to select both Jalen Reagor and Hurts in the 2020 NFL Draft.
With these various rumors swirling, the oddsmakers at SportsLine.com have tabled Lincoln Riley as the fourth most-likely candidate to land the Eagles coaching job at +700, with a trio of Andy Reid disciples at the top of the odds board headlined by Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy at +450.
Former Eagles’ running back and current Eagles’ running backs coach Duce Staley has the second shortest odds to become the next head coach in the city of Brotherly Love at +500, while Chiefs’ quarterback coach (and again former Eagles’ player) Mike Kafka rounds out the top three at +600.
It may seem odd to fire Andy Reid and then follow that up with two consecutive coaching hires directly from his coaching tree, but when have the Eagles ever done things in a traditional facet?
